Modern rugs can be either factory-made or hand-made. They are made of wool, silk, leather, rayon and more. Usually modern rugs are piled. You can use modern rugs to cover a floor or to decorate walls.
At first let’s know about what is the difference between modern rugs and gobelins or mats. Threads of modern rugs’ pile are fastened off with knots.
On the contrary a gobelin or a tapestry has no knots and threads are dragged through the base. These threads are nailed down to each other by using special fork.
Two kinds of surfaces and ornaments are used in modern rugs. Modern rugs are manufactured, using very difficult, accurate technique, with mathematical precision.
Often, computer-aided design is used in their manufacturing. On the contrary to modern rugs, gobelins are manufactured quite arbitrary. Gobelins have no rows, and pattern lines can be designed in many ways. So you can apply certain freedom and fantasy.
Apart from modern rugs and gobelins there are mats. They differ from modern rugs in the method of threads interweaving (it is very similar to that in tapestry). Also mats are made of sisal (dried fibers of agave), but nevertheless, mats are prototypes of modern rugs.
