In the late of the 18th century rag rugs were made of strips cut from old clothing. Usually if some clothing appeared to be unused, then rug rugs were made of it. You may want to recycle some old clothing into rag rugs too or you may want to purchase strips of fabric to crochet rag rugs
from. Check your local fabric shop; you may find something you would like to crochet a rug from.
Rag rugs can be made from a variety of fabrics such as wool, cotton, silk or rayon. You had better not mix the kind of fabrics you are using to make the rug because the shrinkage of material varies between woolen, cotton and silk goods.
Widths of rag strips vary from one quarter to one inch, depending on the kind of the rug and desired durability. When choosing the fabric you are going to use and width of strips, keep in mind that softer fabric and narrower strips are easier to crochet with. In rag rugs the fibers are sewn together with a short, tight stitch, using the strongest threads.
Rag rugs of different colours and ornaments are available. |
