Tibetan Rugs

Tibetan rugs stand apart from other rugs. Since Tibet is considered to be a very mysterious region, everything that has Tibetan origin attracts people very much. Tibetan lifestyle is rather modest and of course it leaves a mark on its art. That is, most families possess only a limited number of goods.

There are trunks to hold family treasures and personal goods, cabinets to keep food, utensils and religious implements, and small tables to display religious objects. It is well known that Tibetan lifestyle is connected with Buddhism tightly. The term "Tibetan art" applies not only to works created by Tibetan artists, but also by artists in China, Nepal and India working in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

Mostly, religious motives are painted on Tibetan rugs. But also one may find Tibetan rugs with secular pictures on them. As far as Chinese traditional art has had great influence on Tibetan art, rugs with dragons, phoenixes and clouds are widespread.

Typically Tibetan rugs are intended for use as mats to sit on or for meditation.
